Historique
L’Infantry Division est la base de l’organisation des forces en campagne. Elle est l’élément essentiel du corps d’armée, le plus souvent constitué de deux divisions d’infanterie et d’une division blindée. Elle est la plus petite formation qui comprenne toutes les unités terrestres des armes et services lui permettant, par ses propres moyens, de conduire des opérations stratégiques. La valeur combative d’une division d’infanterie dépend de sa capacité à coordonner ces armes et services afin de soutenir le combat pendant une période notable. Dans les opérations actives, la division est renforcée par un bataillon de chars moyens, un bataillon de chasseurs de chars (Tank Destroyer) et un groupe de DCA, tous non organiques et faisant partie des réserves générales.
